The Marvelous Countdown, Day 8: Phoenix Wright

Yes, THAT Phoenix Wright. The lawyer. He's in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I don't know either.

Okay, so he might be a little out of place in this battle of juggernauts and mega men, but from what I've seen he's one of the most unique fighting game characters ever made, with a lot to bring to the table. Phoenix Wright completely plays by his own rules in combat, having 3 "modes" of play: Investigation, Courtroom, and Turnabout. The goal when using Wright is to get to turnabout mode as quick as you can, but let's back up for a second.

In Investigation mode, Wright collects "evidence" by pressing combinations of buttons, up to 3 pieces total. If you have a "correct" piece of evidence, the picture of said evidence will light up in his custom HUD display. If you have the wrong evidence you can throw it at your opponent and try for another piece.

Once you have everything you need (3 pieces of "correct" evidence), you can enter Courtroom mode, gaining access to some new moves, and the ability to use your collected evidence to shoot projectiles. While Wright can hold his own a bit better than before by taking advantage of his newfound abilities, the goal in Courtroom mode is to land his famous Objection while holding the right evidence. That seems to be where the main challenge will lie, ad Objections are slow to start up and I imagine hard to combo into.

Once you manage to object to your opponent, it's time for Wright to truly shine (literally) in Turnabout mode. All his aforementioned projectiles are faster, his normal attacks produce gigantic Objection fingers, and his Cornered theme begins to play. In Turnabout mode, he is one of the best characters in the game, and gains access to his absurdly powerful level 3 hyper. Be mindful though, that Turnabout mode has a time limit; once it runs out, it's back to searching for evidence.

What I think would be the best strategy is to get to Turnabout mode, use Wright until Turnabout is juuuust about to run out, and then tag in another character; Wright's assists will retain their Turnabout properties, making him a very useful assist character as well. How you'll GET to Turnabout mode, well, that's the part I'm unsure of.

People clamored from far and wide to get Phoenix Wright in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but now that his playstyle has been dissected and found to be complex, will people actually use him? Or will they opt for a more beginner-friendly character? This is an interesting test of character loyalty in my opinion, but are people up for it?

Psychotic Informer - 7/21/11

1. More awesome (and sad) news coming your way in this edition of Psychotic Informer! First up, breaking news! The Kirby game for the Wii that we have simply been calling ‘Kirby Wii’ finally has an actual name! The highly anticipated game is going to be called ‘Kirby Returns To Dreamland’. Based on the title, I am PUMPED for this game. Kirby can finally recover from the ‘half-a-Kirby’ game Epic Yarn! What do you think about this title? Do you think it sounds AWESOME like I do? Post your opinion in the comments! (For more information, read the full article)

2. There’s some more Phoenix Wright news for today; Phoenix is going to be a new character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3! Other new characters are going to include: Hawkeye, Ghost Rider, Firebrand, and Strider! I don’t know about you, but I think ‘OBJECTION!’ is going to be the new Falcon Punch, don’t you think? (For more information, read the full article)

3. More sad news about the 3DS today. The highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed: Lost Legacy has been cancelled. It was cancelled way back in September of 2010. "It wasn't due to anything that took place. We felt the machine already had a number of hardcore games for its release," Said Ubisoft. By ‘hardcore games for its release’, you mean Nintendogs? Yes, that is totally hardcore. There has only been one really great title so far, in my opinion. I was honestly looking forward to this game. This is a very bad week for games. First Mega Man Legends 3, now this. I wonder what else will happen this week? Stay tuned and find out! What do you think about the cancellations this year? Post your opinion in the comments! (For more information, read the full article)

4. At this year's San Diego Comic Con, a new Zelda: Skyward Sword trailer has been released! It features a great view of the starting town of Skyloft and shows how Link begins his adventure! It also features several new enemies. And Gorons! The Gorons look kind of strange, in my opinion. I don’t really like the character design in this, but I am really excited for this game, and if you’re a Zelda fan, you should be too! Watch the new trailer and enjoy!

Psychotic Informer - 7/16/11

1.  Big news today for you Phoenix Wright fans! The Phoenix Wright movie has been confirmed! The movie which will be hitting Japanese cinemas next Spring has not been confirmed for localisation anywhere else yet, but we’re sure it will be released on the internet with subtitles for us all to love. Check out pictures and more here. Do you think this movie looks cool? Do you think they chose good actors for the roles? Post your opinion in the comments!

2. Do you like dancing? Many of us do. According to consumer sales, a LOT of people do. Today, Just Dance 2 became the best selling third party Wii game ever with 14 million copies sold! It has sold more copies than even some Mario games. That’s kind of crazy. I actually have Just Dance 2, and I think it’s pretty sweet, so in my opinion, it deserves the title. (For more information, read the full article)

3. Is your regular alarm clock just not cutting it for you anymore? Do you need something more superior to wake you up in the morning? Do you like guns? If you answered all those questions with yes, the “Bandai Gun o'Clock” is for you! Though this is a gaming news series, it’s always fun to talk about something else for a change. The “Gun o'Clock” is a regular alarm clock with a bulls-eye on the top. When it wakes you up in the morning the bulls-eye pops up and you grab the included plastic gun and shoot at the target! Once you successfully shoot the target, the bulls-eye will go back down again and the alarm will stop. Would you get one of these? Post your opinion in the comments. I don’t know about you, but to me, this sounds really cool for gamers and/or assassins. Pick up your own “Bandai Gun o'Clock” here for $70!
